Casual Discussion on Huangdi Neijing Chapter 24|Cloud-Rain Intercourse, Clear and Turbid Qi Flowing Separately
Hello everyone, I’m Dao Yingzi. Our series interpreting Huangdi Neijing is here again.
I. Brief Review of the Previous Chapter
Chapter 23 established the general principle of yin ascending and yang descending, as well as peaceful yin and solid yang for the movement of qi in the human body. It explained that once the global spiral topological force network all over the body becomes blocked, body fluid condenses into refined essence, and accumulated refined essence forms stagnant crystals. Internal and external three layers of wind pathogenic factors and various deficiency-excess disorders all arise from such stagnation. The previous chapter only illustrated that disharmony between yin and yang triggers illnesses, yet it failed to elaborate the complete operating model of mutual communication, circulation and mutual generation of yin and yang. Based on the metaphor of heaven’s clouds and rain recorded in Suwen, this chapter corresponds to the circulation rules of clear yang and turbid yin in the human body, perfects the circulation logic of dimensional force networks, and supplements the core Dao of mutual rooting and intercourse of yin and yang.
II. Original Text + Vernacular Paraphrase
Original Text from Suwen · Treatise on the Correspondence of Yin and Yang
Therefore, clear yang constitutes heaven, and turbid yin constitutes earth. Earth qi ascends to form clouds; heaven qi descends to form rain. Rain originates from earth qi, and clouds derive from heaven qi.
Clear yang exits through the upper orifices; turbid yin exits through the lower orifices. Clear yang diffuses to the interstitial spaces; turbid yin flows inward to the five zang-organs. Clear yang fills the four limbs; turbid yin converges into the six fu-organs.
If clear qi lingers below, undigested diarrhea will occur; if turbid qi surges upward, chest and abdominal distention will develop.
Vernacular Paraphrase
Light and ascending qi rises and gathers to form the firmament; heavy and descending tangible substances condense to form the earth. Water vapor from the earth transpires upward to generate clouds, while cold clear qi high in the sky condenses to fall as rain. Although rain seems to fall from heaven, its root lies in water vapor rising from the ground; clouds, though formed by ascending earth qi, can only take shape relying on the cold qi of heaven above.
Translated to the operating rules of the human body: clear yang qi disperses outward through the upper orifices such as eyes, ears, nose and mouth; turbid yin waste discharges from the lower orifices of anterior and posterior private parts. Clear yang spreads to the skin and interstitial spaces to defend the body surface barrier; turbid yin differentiates into refined nutrients to nourish the five zang-organs inwardly. Clear yang fills the four limbs and hundreds of bones and joints to sustain the strength of body movement; undigested turbid grain qi flows into the six fu-organs for digestion, transportation and excretion.
If clear yang that ought to rise sinks and stagnates in the lower jiao, stubborn diarrhea with undigested food will appear; if turbid yin that ought to descend reverses and blocks the upper jiao, stuffiness, distention and qi stagnation in the chest and abdomen will occur.
Supplementary Annotation: Undigested diarrhea refers to bowel movements with completely undigested food; chest-abdominal distention means congestion and fullness in the chest and abdomen.
III. Summary of Mainstream Traditional Interpretations
Ancient physicians’ annotations: Clear yang ascending and turbid yin descending are unchanging inherent laws of heaven, earth and the human body. Clouds and rain serve as a concrete manifestation of yin-yang mutual rooting. Without ascending earth qi, there would be no clouds; without converging heaven qi, there would be no rain. Yin and yang cannot exist separated and alone. Clear yang and turbid yin each have fixed passageways to travel; reversed ascending and descending tracks are the root cause of illnesses arising from disordered qi movement.
Orthodox medical interpretations from medical colleges: Heaven and earth complete the intercourse of yin and yang via clouds and rain, while the human body sustains vital life force through separated flow of clear and turbid qi. Clear yang governs qi transformation functions, and turbid yin governs tangible essence, blood and metabolic waste. If upper and lower passageways are disconnected, water and fire cannot interact, and various mixed cold-heat disorders will emerge.
Popular health preservation interpretations: The core of health preservation lies in conforming to the natural laws of ascending and descending. Minimize cold food that damages the ascending yang mechanism, reduce anxious thinking that stagnates qi movement, avoid sinking clear yang and reversed turbid yin, so that the spleen-stomach, heart-lung and kidney water can interact and nourish each other normally.
IV. Personal Insights Gained from Actual Cultivation
The whole passage is interpreted based on the system of global spiral topological Dao, dimensional force network theory and the record of fluid-refined essence-crystals, distinguishing it from superficial TCM discussions widely available online:
Heaven, earth and the human body share the same double-layer spiral funnel force network. Clouds and rain represent yin ascending and yang descending on a macroscopic scale, continuing the core theories of Chapter 23.
Chapter 23 exclusively discussed yin ascending and yang descending on the microscopic scale of the human body, while clouds and rain in heaven and earth act as macroscopic evidence of this rule. Earth vapor transpires to form clouds, corresponding to refined yin essence ascending upward inside the human body; cold heaven qi condenses to fall as rain, corresponding to yang qi converging inward and descending.
If heaven and earth cut off the exchange of clouds and rain, water vapor cannot circulate up and down, leaving the land dry and all living things to perish. Once the passageways for clear and turbid qi in the human body are blocked, the multi-layer dimensional force network twists and knots, body fluid cannot circulate between upper and lower parts, and long-term stagnation condenses into stagnant refined essence and accumulated crystals. The root of common chronic conditions such as upper heat with lower cold, insomnia, abdominal distention and persistent diarrhea lies entirely in the breakdown of this two-way circulation system.
The movement of yin and yang is never a one-way passage. Only ascending without descending, or only descending without ascending, violates the principle of topological balance. Only alternating ascending and descending circulation can form a complete intercourse pattern.
Clear yang and turbid yin each abide by exclusive passageways, an inherent rule for layered operation of the whole-body dimensional force network.
Under normal topological structure, layers are clearly divided: clear qi stays outside and above, turbid qi remains inside and below. Long-term sedentary habits, excessive raw-cold food and overthinking will disturb the whole-body qi movement and twist the spiral tracks: clear yang sinks and stagnates in the lower jiao, weakening spleen-stomach transportation and transformation and triggering frequent undigested diarrhea; turbid yin surges upward to block the chest, heart and lung, causing qi stagnation, congestion, excessive phlegm and distention.
Most herbal formulas on the market only tonify the spleen, soothe the liver or clear fire, merely dredging superficial stagnant crystals temporarily. They cannot repair the misaligned layered force network as a whole, hence illnesses recur repeatedly and are hard to eradicate.
"Clear qi lingering below, turbid qi surging above" creates conditions for latent pathogenic factors to breed, linking back to the theory of three layers of wind pathogenic factors from the previous chapter.
Reversed ascending and descending of clear and turbid qi breaks the closed protective barrier formed by whole-body qi movement, and the opening and closing of skin interstitial spaces lose control. External pathogenic factors such as wind, cold, summer-heat and damp easily invade the meridians and zang-fu organs to hide and linger. Latent pathogenic factors stagnate in the body long-term, continuously blocking spiral circulation, accumulating more stagnant crystals, and gradually evolving complex mixed disorders of internal wind, stagnant fire and phlegm-dampness. On the contrary, if the passageways for clear ascending and turbid descending flow smoothly without obstruction, internal and external qi tightly seals the body, and the three layers of wind pathogenic factors have no place to attach or linger, so people will naturally resist illness.
Yin and yang root in and rely on one another, distinguishing superficial circulation and reverse topological cultivation methods.
Rain cannot exist without ascending earth vapor, nor clouds without converging heaven qi. Yang qi cannot function without the carrier of yin essence, and yin essence cannot operate without the driving force of yang qi — this is the fundamental principle of yin-yang mutual rooting. Simply tonifying yang or nourishing yin falls into one-sidedness, just like creating clouds without rainfall, or generating rain without cloud formation, unable to build a complete circulation.
Ordinary people regulate clear ascending and turbid descending for health preservation, which only belongs to superficial circulation within the same dimension. It can merely harmonize qi temporarily, unable to break free from the general trend of all things spiraling downward and turbidifying, so stagnation roots breed repeatedly. The true way to harmonize yin and yang and eradicate illness focuses on unblocking the upper-lower intercourse passageways, sorting out global spiral veins, letting clear yang and turbid yin circulate and generate each other spontaneously, supplemented by reverse topological remodeling to resolve stagnation of fluid-refined essence-crystals from the root and break free from superficial cycles.
Connecting the complete evolutionary context of heaven, earth and humanity:
Dao generates primal qi; primal qi divides into yin and yang; yin and yang differentiate into two tendencies of ascending and descending. Chapter 23 discussed illnesses triggered by unbalanced ascending and descending, while this chapter elaborates the complete dynamic circulation of mutual communication between yin and yang and separated flow of clear and turbid qi. First we grasp the constant standard of yin-yang balance, then understand the operating mode of yin-yang circulation and exchange. Static balance progresses to dynamic circulation. Clouds and rain in heaven and earth are macroscopic manifestations of primal qi intercourse, while ascending and descending of clear and turbid qi in the human body are microscopic reflections of primal qi intercourse. Step by step, we comprehend the miniature heaven and earth contained within the human body.
V. Full Summary of the Chapter
Heaven and earth complete yin-yang intercourse relying on clouds and rain, while the human body sustains vital life force through clear yang ascending and turbid yin descending, both following the same global spiral transformation law.
Clear yang flows through the seven orifices, skin and four limbs; turbid yin differentiates refined nutrients to nourish the five zang-organs, and waste flows into the six fu-organs. Misaligned ascending and descending passageways cause clear qi to sink and turbid qi to surge upward, triggering diarrhea, distention, upper heat with lower cold and other disorders, alongside breeding of stagnant crystals and latent pathogenic factors.
Ordinary herbal conditioning only relieves superficial symptoms. The key to radical treatment lies in unblocking the upper-lower intercourse passageways, repairing the orderly layered dimensional force network, letting clear and turbid qi each follow their inherent tracks, enabling continuous mutual generation and circulation of yin and yang, unobstructed and balanced whole-body qi movement, consistent with the fundamental principle of peaceful yin and solid yang for long-term health preservation.
