This lesson follows our previous lecture about the Chinese character 六,and we will follow the same writing framework. We will sort out the complete cosmic evolution sequence: Dao → 一 → 二 → 三 → Four Symbols → Five Elements → Six Directions (六) → 七.

  1. Basic Knowledge of the Chinese Character 七
  2. Pronunciation
Pinyin: qī, first tone. It is only used as a Chinese numeral with no special variant pronunciation.
    Common Chinese words containing 七:七日来复,七曜,北斗七星,七窍,七情,七政,七七,七元.
  3. Character Evolution & Original Meaning of 七
The oracle bone script and bronze script of 七 are self-indicative characters. The horizontal stroke 一 stands for the whole universe, and a vertical line cuts through the center. Its original meaning is to cut and divide all things.
Ancient tally characters: 一,二,三,四 are simple stacked strokes. Characters 五 to 九 adopt crossed strokes to avoid confusion with the character 十. During the Warring States Period Chu bamboo slip era, the bottom of the vertical stroke of 七 was curved. Small seal script fixed its shape as one horizontal stroke with a curved tail.
    Shuowen Jiezi records: 七,阳之正也。从一,微阴从中衺出也。
Explanation: The character 一 represents pure primordial Yang Qi; a wisp of faint Yin Qi grows inside it. The interweaving of Yin and Yang is the core meaning hidden in the character 七.
Clerical script and regular script kept the curved stroke design from small seal script, forming today’s simplified character 七;traditional Chinese form is identical to the simplified one.
  4. Definitions of 七
Original meaning: cut apart, divide equally
Core meaning: the seventh number in Chinese numerals 一,二,三,四,五,六,七;minor Yang number
Extended meaning: cosmic cycles, human sense organs, celestial rhythms, emotional categories. Ancient Chinese people summarized all cyclic systems of heaven, human bodies and calendars under the Chinese character 七.
  5. Orthodox Theories of Yi Learning and Taoism
    Cosmic evolution sequence: Dao → 一 → 二 → 三 → Four Symbols → Five Elements → Six Directions (六) → 七
The character 六 stands for the complete three-dimensional space including upper, lower and four cardinal directions, which carries the circulation of Five Elements Qi. The character 七 adds a central origin point to the six directions, forming a full cosmic space of six peripheries plus one center. It also marks the turning point of Yin-Yang circulation and the restart of cycles.
Yi Numerology: 七 is minor Yang; the return of Yang on the seventh day
Heavenly Yang numbers: 一,三,五,七,九。七 is minor Yang, 六 is old Yin, 九 is old Yang.
    Zhouyi · Fu Gua: 反复其道,七日来复,天行也。
After six lines finish a full cycle of Yin-Yang wax and wane, Yang revives on the seventh stage to restart the cycle. This rule is called “all cycles shift at 七”. 六 is the end of a cycle, while 七 marks a brand new round of Yin-Yang alternation, matching the annotation “a faint Yin grows from inside 一” in Shuowen Jiezi.
Five Elements generating numbers: Earth 二 generates fire, Heaven 七 completes fire. The character 七 corresponds to fire Qi, representing ascent, transformation and repetition.
Celestial meanings of 七:七曜,北斗七星,Seven Mansions of Four Symbols
七曜: the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. Seven days form a small natural cycle of heaven. Lunar phases change every seven days, and tides and climate follow the rhythm of 七.
北斗七星 sits at the center of the universe. The rotation of its handle controls four seasons, cold and heat, and governs the six directions represented by 六. The six directions are the carrier, and the seven stars are the core pivot.
The twenty-eight lunar mansions are divided into Four Symbols, each group contains seven mansions. The starry sky is divided with 七 as the basic unit.
    Human body correspondences of 七:七窍,七情,七元
七窍: two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, one mouth. These passages connect human Qi with heaven and earth. The six directions wrap the human body, and the seven orifices are the windows for humans to exchange Yin and Yang energy with the universe.
七情: joy, anger, anxiety, rumination, sorrow, fear, shock. The movement of visceral Five Elements Qi produces seven emotional states, the external manifestation of internal Yin-Yang interaction.
七元 (Taoist term): internal vitality corresponding to seven orifices. Unblocked 七窍 lets human Yin-Yang circulation resonate with the seven-day cosmic rhythm.
    Extended heaven-human matching systems
Calendar: five days form one hou, three hous form one solar term; every seven days creates a small climate cycle. Folk customs hold seven rounds of memorial rituals for the deceased, using 七 as the cycle for souls to travel between Yin and Yang and return to origin.
Alchemical cultivation: seven days make one small refining cycle, matching the rebirth of a single Yang Qi on the seventh day. Practitioners harmonize their own Yin-Yang following the cosmic rhythm of 七.
  6. Personal Philosophical Insights
Review of previous characters: Four Symbols mark flat boundaries; 五 stands for Five Elements and inner spiritual awakening; 六 represents complete three-dimensional space; 七 creates cycle turning points inside space, the boundary between motion and stillness, new and old, Yin-Yang alternation.
The character 六 only forms static space holding Five Elements Qi, while 七 endows the six directions with dynamic circulating rhythms.
With only the space of 六,Qi stays static; at the number 七,cyclic natural laws appear. Yin and Yang no longer flow one-way, but wax and wane in endless repetition. If 六 is the “container” of the universe, 七 is the “rhythm law” driving Qi circulation inside the container.

The glyph meaning “a faint Yin grows inside 一” fits this logic perfectly: 一 is pure Yang of the whole universe, 六 represents empty space, and 七 starts the alternating transformation of Yin and Yang, creating cycles of motion and stillness.
Six directions plus one central origin form the complete universe
Upper, lower, four cardinal directions make six outer positions; adding the central primal point of heaven and earth forms seven. 六 refers to external orientations, while 七 includes the inner governing core. Understanding 六 only lets you see outer space; comprehending 七 lets you find the central pivot behind all cosmic movement, symbolized by 北斗七星.
七日来复: a core metaphor for spiritual cultivation
After six lines reach extreme Yin, Yang vitality returns on the seventh stage. For human life and worldly events: any trough, stagnation or blockage (extreme Yin state of 六) will meet a turning point when reaching 七.
Many people feel hopeless in adversity because they do not understand the cosmic rule “all changes arrive at 七”. Meanwhile 七 is minor Yang, meaning the turning point does not bring sudden prosperity, but slow germination of faint Yang Qi — just like the wisp of faint Yin emerging from the stroke 一,gradual and unhurried, no impatience allowed.
六六大顺 stands for stable unobstructed Qi flow, while shifts at 七 are the normal state of natural alternation
The character 六 symbolizes complete, peaceful and steady cycles; 七 means changes will inevitably follow long-term peace. Nothing in heaven and earth stays prosperous forever, for Yin and Yang alternate repeatedly. Mastering 六 lets you stay calm in present tranquility; understanding 七 lets you view rises and falls with equanimity, free from greed in good fortune and despair in hardship.
    Complete cosmic evolution logic
    Dao: formless chaotic origin
    一: undivided pure Yang Qi
二: separation of Yin and Yang
三: heaven, human, earth the three talents
Four Symbols: four cardinal directions, flat boundary
五: convergence of Five Elements, inner spiritual awakening
六: complete three-dimensional space of upper, lower and four directions (static field)
七: six directions plus central origin, turning points of Yin-Yang circulation, birth of cosmic rhythms (dynamic operation)
The character 五 cultivates inner balance; 六 lets you observe the full space of heaven and earth; 七 lets you understand cycles of transformation. These three progressive levels build a complete cognition of heaven and humanity, from inner self to outer cosmos, from static shape to dynamic movement.
  7. Full Text Summary
    Progressive evolution of Chinese numerals: Dao → 一 → 二 → 三 → Four Symbols → 五 → 六 → 七
六 governs static three-dimensional six-direction space; 七 stands for minor Yang, seven-day cycles, cosmic central pivot and Yin-Yang alternation, the key numeral shifting static space to dynamic circulation.
Core orthodox viewpoints of Yi Learning and Taoism
    Yi Learning: 七 is minor Yang, Yang returns on the seventh day, cycles restart, matching fire generating number;
    Cosmic Dao: 七曜 counts days, 北斗七星 commands the six-direction starry sky;
Human body: 七窍 communicates with heaven and earth, 七 emotionally corresponds to five internal organs, human rhythms align with cosmic cycles.
    Levels of cultivation cognition
Mastering Five Elements harmonizes inner Qi; seeing through 六 reveals the full picture of heaven and earth; comprehending the character 七 lets you perceive all cycles of rise and fall, knowing the alternation of smooth and rough times is the unchanging cosmic law, keeping constant calm in all matters.
    Deep glyph meaning of 七
“A faint Yin emerges within 一”: pure Yang totality witnesses the first interweaving of Yin and Yang, the textual origin of 七 as the numeral of cyclic transformation. No permanent pure Yang or everlasting pure Yin exists in the universe, and alternation at 七 is the natural Dao inscribed in this Chinese character.
    Closing Remarks
This lecture combines oracle bone character research, annotations from Shuowen Jiezi, traditional Zhouyi and Taoist image-number theories, plus personal insights into the progressive sequence of Chinese numerals 一,二,三,四,五,六,七. Ancient character interpretation has no single standard answer, and different classics hold different perspectives.
Studying 五 awakens your original mind; studying 六 reveals the space of heaven and earth; studying 七 unveils cycles of repetition. These three progressive stages expand your cognition of Yin and Yang in heaven and earth. Grasping 六 grants temporary peace; comprehending 七 allows you to accept all rises and falls in the world calmly, conforming to the core wisdom of unity of heaven and humanity.
